‘The Best Cardinal Africa Never Had’

For many years back in South Africa, I was conscious of Archbishop Denis Hurley as the supreme example of what a church leader under apartheid should be: a formidable opponent of injustice in all its forms, and a forthright speaker of the truth.  It was only much later that I came to learn that as a younger man, these qualities had already earned him a reputation within the Church, during the heady days of Vatican II.  So it was with delight that I found a review of a biography, under the headline I have shamelessly stolen for this post.
