One of the things that strikes me about both Ruth and Naomi and Jonathon and David is that these are examples of love freely given between two adult people. Marriage was a property contract with out any real personal freedom for the parties involved.

It may be that Old Testament authors had no other kinds of relationship in which to describe the kind of freely given love which is now the hall mark of heterosexual marriage.

Colleen, you’re right to point to the totally different nature of marriage in Biblical times – and at most times, in most of the world until fairly recently. As I keep saying, “traditional” marriage is a modern invention. It is crucial that we put aside the whole notion, and then we can start a proper discussion on the real nature and value of loving relationships – of all kinds.
