This is intriguing. I should note, though, that “transvestite” often isn’t a preferred term anymore (http://archive.glaad.org/media/guide/transfocus.php). I’m not particularly bothered myself, particularly given that these sources are from 1974 and 1984, and there probably hasn’t been enough work done in the field, but it might be better to use a different word in the future, such as cross-dressing, to avoid alienating potential readers.

Hi. Quinn. Thanks for pointing out the error. “Cross-dressing” probably is more appropriate. I’ll go back and try to correct earlier usages, too.

  2. Rev Dr John J McNeill Says:

I wish to witness to the extraordinary santliness of Mother Clare, a transvestite and member of Sunshine Cathesdral, an MCC church, in Fort Lauderdale. Mother began life as a police man in a major south Florida city. After her transition Mother Clare adopted the dress of a Franciscan nun, lived in a convent and every Sunday before every service led a group in the recitation of the rosary. She was a woman of extraordinary compassion and concern for the poor and suffering. God bless her memory

Wow! Thanks for that information, John, which is completely new to me. As part of my series on LGBT Saints, I hope to build a collection of posts on “Modern Heroes”, for which people like Mother Clare and Mychal Judge would be first rate candidates : as you would yourself. Many thanks.
