Faith at Pride, London Version.

The “Pride Month” of June is almost over, but Pride continues regardless. As always, London pride will be in July, not June – this Saturday, July 3rd. As always, there will be a range of faith -based groups participating. There will be two Catholic groups formally joining the march, supported by individuals from the Soho Masses – which will be formally represented by an information table at Trafalgar Square. I am certain that there will be numerous other faith -based groups too.

In addition to the individual denominations, the LGCM (Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement) is co-ordinating a visible, combined presence by promoting these t-shirts:

From Ekklesia:

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Christians are planning an organised and visible presence at the upcoming Pride march through the streets of London this weekend.

“Many LGBT people have a deep faith and a clear desire to express their spirituality in spite of the anti-homosexuality rhetoric of some hardline Christians,” a spokesperson for the organisers said.

The LGBT Christian groups from the capital will come together at the parade on Saturday 3 July 2010, staff a stall in the communities section and hold a service of celebration in St Martin-in-the-Fields Church.

The Rev Sharon Ferguson, Chief Executive of LGCM and Senior Pastor at Metropolitan Community Church North London has initiated the collaboration.

She commented: “From the start the main emphasis from all the groups involved has been to get the message across to the LGBT community that it is possible to be both LGBT and Christian. We are proud of our faith and our sexual orientation/gender identity and we want the world to know that. Much of the time when homosexuality is linked to faith in the media it is from a negative perspective – this must change. God’s love is for us all.’

Those interested in finding out more are encouraged to stop and speak to someone wearing a purple T shirt saying ‘Christian and Proud’ on Saturday or go to www.christiansatpride.com.
